I try to guide you to some good stuff, Denver… …late 2017 / early 2018.

Here’s part of what you should check out in 2018…

Vic and the Narwhals…  I’m a fan…  Roka played with them about six months ago and I saw them playing with Don Chicharron last weekend.  I dunno how these cats describe themselves but I’d say something along the lines of: Latin-fusion-psychedelic…  Whatever your description: these cats are fun…  They’re playing on January 18th at Lost Lakedsc09084.jpg

And then there’s Don Chicharron…  Another fav…  This cats drop the Peruvian Chicha on ya…  For those who aren’t familiar: chicha = psychedelic cumbia.  C’mon…  You already know that shit just sounds tight…  These cats played with Vic and the Narwhals at Hi-Dive…

Also!  Saved by Aliens.  Yo, if you’re into bass/drum duo…  These cats.  If you’re reading this blog you may be familiar with my own music, style, abilities, etc…  …yeah, this cat made me wanna go home and practice.  …in an inspired way.  Good shit, yo…  Kid dominates the looper pedal.

Also recently checked out Me Me Monster…  I had heard them from a distance while walking the Denver [Santa Fe] Art Walk last summer but by the time I got to the spot where they were performing they’d were calling it quits.  Still, I made a mental note to check them out and I wasn’t disappointed.   It’s a rock trio: bass, drums, guitar…  Charismatic drummer/singer..  These cats got tricks, yo…  Solid musicians, dress the part, and they take you away for a minute…  They funny…  The bassist wears a monkey mask and plays a sweet Fender Jaguar bass…

That Moon Hooch though…

These cats are fucking bad ass.

Fire…

They’re fire…  Especially at 2:58…  Shit is just UNLEASHED.

FUCKING INSPIRING IN A TIME OF SHIT TIMES!!!

We need more music like this…  A lot more music like this…  More fire like this…  Doesn’t matter what *style, nation of origin, or instruments…  Just FIRE to keep us going through these times of daily psychological trauma and torment.

Secrets of the Alpha Gallo…

Some of the best advice I’ve gotten as an adult child: greet everyone like you’re welcoming them to the party.

And smile.

…been implementing this technique, approach, strategy, whatever, for the past couple of months now.  It’s a game changer.

And what party am I greeting people into?  What is the occasion for smiling?

Late-stage capitalism, of course, and HELL YEAH!!!

We have Kuwaiti oil fires, endless wars, climate change, wage slavery, oil pumps blowing up at the bottom of the gulf, state repression, private prisons, Justin Bieber, Hiroshima, and every 4 years: 1% of the world’s knuckle-dragging primates decide who will be in charge of the most gargantuan war machine in the history of the f’ing planet…

…at the same time, in fairness: humanity landed a spacecraft on a comet, took pictures, and sent that shit back.  And PLUTO!!!  The dopest planet in the solar system has gotten some close up shot!  Dope, dope….

There’s also the smell of a Spring-time rose, the laughter of a kids, the sucking of toes, and I personally love roosters, Charles Mingus, and Triceratops.

Lots of things to love about this planet.  Lots to love to go around.  Infinite questions and curiosities to fulfill…

But you gotta tickle yourself some times cuz this can all be wearing…

This is the batshit crazy party I was born into…  So this is the batshit crazy party I’m gonna welcome you to when I see you…   See.  You.  At.  The.  Show.

One of my favoritist bands of all time.  Polvo!

I picked up on these guys in Buffalo, 1994…  It was my first semester in college, I walked into a a record store, asked the cashier if there were any good bands coming to town…  He recommended Polvo and pointed me towards their CDs.  He described them as alternate tunings, twangy guitars/effects, note bending, whammy bars, and weird rhythms…  Sounded cool, I checked them out.  Purchased “Today’s Active Lifestyles”.

Got hooked.  Shortly after that I purchased all their other CDs and eagerly awaited the release of future albums…

These guys are straight from the Chapel Hill/90’s indie rock days.  My college days.  They remind me of my cute indie rock college radio DJ girlfriend and put me on campus at Rutgers.  …wasn’t a bad place to be.  All  these cool bands rolling through campus or NYC (45 mins away).   From that era, I got to see: Helium, Archers of Loaf, Unwound, Blonde Redhead, Cat Power, Built to Spill, and a bunch of other acts…

Polvo was hands down the best.  You just never knew where the guitars were gonna come at you next…  To get a sense of what I’m talking about, jump to 3:59 in this video…

Been re-listening to them obsessively lately…  I just find their level of experimentation inspiring…
